Colleen O. Kane, 87, of Iowa City, passed away at her home on Aug. 1, 2023.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, Aug. 7, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Visitation will be Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, with the rosary recited at 4 p.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, with a luncheon following the burial at the church.
Colleen was born Nov. 11, 1935, in St. Donatus, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Virginia (Haiar) Weis. On Oct. 1, 1966, Colleen married David Kane at St. Joseph's Church in Bellevue, Iowa. Until the age of 14 she attended country schools in rural areas around Bellevue. Colleen attended St. Joseph's High School in Bellevue, graduating in 1953.
She then went on to attend Clarke College in Dubuque from 1954 to 1955 before she earned her R.N. degree from St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Dubuque in 1958. After graduation she worked as an R.N. at Mercy Hospital in Clinton, Iowa from 1958 to 1961 and then transferred to V.A. Domicilary until October 1965. In 1965, she began working at VA Medical Center, Iowa City, retiring in 1995 after 34 years.
She was an honorary member of Mercy School of Nursing, Dubuque, Iowa and a longtime member of St. Patrick's Church since 1965.
Survivors include her husband, David and their two daughters, Julie (Robert) Kalkert of Boston, Mass., and their daughters, Sarah and Jenna; and Susan (Jeffrey) Sterling of Naperville, Ill., and their son, James and daughter Lily; as well as her sister Joyce (Ardell "Bud") Till of Bellevue, Iowa.
Colleen was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Eldon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Patrick's Church or St. Jude's Research Hospital.
