Coleman, Bert E. 'Lucky'
Bert E. “Lucky” Coleman, 90, of Marion, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, by the Rev. David O'Connor. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, with a Scripture service beginning at 4 p.m. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 298 of Marion.
Survivors include the love of his life, his wife, Nancy; his children, Ernie (Chris) Coleman, Charles (Linda) Heiden, Renae Norte, Angie (Steve) Climer, Shelli (Bill) Mealman, Maria (Bryan) Arnold, Glaine Coleman and Cammi Coleman; 22 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Lena Mae Hass.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Young; three sisters, Bertha, Dorothy and Hazel; two brothers, Clarence and George; three grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Jayma and Sarah; and two great-grandchildren, Brantley and Baby Mealman.
Bert was born April 16, 1923, in rural Marion, the son of Bert B. and Mary (Odland) Coleman. He proudly served his country in the Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Wichita. Bert married Nancy McQuown on Dec. 28, 1965, in Castle Rock, Colo. He enjoyed going to Donutland for coffee, drawing, and going out to lunch with his buddies. Bert was recently able to participate in an Honor Flight, which he considered a highlight of his life. He WALKED joyfully into the arms of Jesus and will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family in Bert's memory.
