Clifford D. Pettit, 71, longtime resident of Iowa City, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
A gathering for family and friends will be held on Sunday, Dec. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Iowa City American Legion. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in his memory to the Iowa City American Legion Post 17. Clifford Dale Pettit was born Jan. 8, 1946, in Iowa City, the son of Edward and Josephine (Bahles) Pettit. He was united in marriage to Rita Bertelli on Jan. 13, 1965. For many years Cliff worked in auto body repair, first for Kennedy's Auto and later at PB Body Shop. Following this, he worked for J.C. Penney before retirement. He liked NASCAR, the Iowa Hawkeyes, working in his yard at home, fishing and spending time with his "Legion" family.
His family includes his siblings, Donald J. Pettit (Evelyn) of Waterloo, Thomas R. Pettit (Jane), Kenneth R. Pettit (Gina) and Jennie L. Pettit, all of North Liberty; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Emmet; and two brothers, Edward L. and Joseph Dewayne Pettit.
