Cleo E. Smith was born May 5, 1923, in Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Earl B. and Rebecca (McCallister) Smith. Cleo died Friday, July 22, 2016, at English Valley Care Center in North English, at age 93.
She graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1940 and received her B.S. at SUI in 1944. Cleo enlisted in the USN Waves Hospital Corps and served from 1944 to 1946. After returning from her service, she received her certificate in physical therapy in 1947 from SUI and later her M.A. in education from the University of Iowa in 1957.
Cleo worked as a physical therapist for 40 years, initially in poliomyelitis, a handicapped children's school and private practices in Iowa, California, Georgia, Arizona, Florida and Hawaii. She also worked two years as a vocational rehabilitation counselor, traveling to Europe, the Orient and Mexico, before returning to Williamsburg in 1987 to assist her brother, Dean.
Cleo was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Williamsburg. She served on the Friends of the Library board and delivered meals for HACAP. She enjoyed bowling and golfing for many years.
She is survived by a nephew, Dean Earl (Connie) Smith, and their children, Mallory, Dallas and Marissa, all of Ankeny; a sister-in-law, Shirley Smith of Williamsburg; and many friends, including the 510 Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Alice Smith Andrews and Virginia Smith Daniels; and two brothers, Dean E. Smith and Geo. Eugene Smith.
Celebration of Life memorial services will be at a later date. Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg, is in charge of arrangements.
