Evelyn Chevalier, 81, of Strawberry Point, died peacefully at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, on Monday, March 21, 2011.
Evelyn was born Evelyn Pfrommer on July 8, 1929, in Strawberry Point, the 10th child of John and Sarah (Jopp) Pfrommer. She was raised on an acreage at the edge of town.
Evelyn attended school in Strawberry Point, graduating from Strawberry Point High School in 1946, at the age of 16. Evelyn was always a hard worker, working various jobs, but most of her career was as a computer operator at Seedorff Masonry where she spent 22 years as a dedicated employee.
Evelyn married Donald O. Chevalier on April 30, 1949, in Strawberry Point. The couple began their married life in Strawberry Point, and later moved to Cedar Falls, and briefly Hudson, Iowa, but returned to Strawberry Point where they spent the majority of their married life. To this union were born five children, who all presently reside in Iowa: Pamela (Jerry) McManigle of Waucoma; Susan (Monte) Barker of Hazleton; Terri (David) Gould of Strawberry Point; Randal Chevalier of Oelwein; and James Chevalier and special friend, Brooke Chandler of Colorado.
Evelyn was baptized and confirmed at Emanuel Lutheran Church in 1945. She was a longtime active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and more recently joined Mission in Christ, a North American Lutheran Church, where she was a charter member.
Evelyn is survived by her husband, her children, 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Sarah; four brothers, John, Herbert, Fred and Arthur Pfrommer; five sisters, Gertrude Pfrommer, Dorothy Kragenbrink, Anna Fabbi, Alice Forester and Ruby Hartwig; and one grandson, Mark McManigle.
