Cheryl Ann Kolar, 67, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, at the Ed and Joan Hemphill Hospice Unit from pancreatic cancer.
Cheryl was born Feb. 23, 1950, in Waterloo, the daughter of Firmin and Alma (Gales) Rottinghaus. She married Robert H. Kolar on March 27, 1978, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids.
Cheryl graduated from Don Bosco High School (1968), received her B.S. in English and secondary education from Iowa State University (1972), and received her M.A. in library science from the University of Iowa (1976). She taught in the Cedar Rapids Community School District for 34 years, 10 years as a library/media specialist and 24 years in seventh grade language arts at Harding Middle School. She also taught second grade religious education for 12 years at St. Matthew's Catholic Church.
Cheryl was an active member for 26 years of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter OP, St. Luke's auxiliary board member, two book clubs, three bridge groups and a mahjongg group.
Survivors include her husband, Robert, of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Amy (Tim) Taylor of Chicago; son, Robert (Leah Schmidt) Kolar; four brothers, James (Karen) Rottinghaus of La Porte City, John (Dessie) Rottinghaus of Waterloo, Steven (Karen) Rottinghaus of Brighton, Mich., and Gerald Rottinghaus of Waterloo; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Rottinghaus of Waterloo and Ethel (David) Knutson of Cedar Rapids; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law, Harold and Harriet Kolar; sister, Sandra Kipp Franken; brother, Michael Rottinghaus; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 30, at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, with visitation one hour prior to service. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel Stateroom, with a vigil service beginning at 7 p.m. Burial: Sancta Maria Cemetery in Gilbertville at 2 p.m. Monday.
