Charlotte Sommerville
Marion
Charlotte Sommerville, 94, of Marion, Iowa, joined her Savior in Glory on Friday, Aug. 18, 2023. Charlotte was born in Wichita, Kan. Her father died when she was two, and her mother took Charlotte and her sister to grow up on the farm of her grandparents near Perry, Kansas. During her first year as a student at the University of Kansas, Charlotte committed her life to Jesus. She graduated with a B.S. in nursing. She has served as a nurse at the University of Kansas Medical Center, two hospitals, two nursing homes, and a mental health institute.
She married James Sommerville in 1957. After their wedding, she and Jim lived for three years in Japan, where John and Susan were born. She and Jim made many Japanese friends, attended a Japanese church, and often invited Japanese friends to their home for dinner.
During her long life, Charlotte served in several churches, most recently Marion Methodist Church. She sang solos at weddings and funerals, taught Sunday school, organized funeral luncheons, guided Bible studies and entertained church visitors in her home.
She is survived by her husband and three children, John (Kathleen) Sommerville of Edina, Minn., Susan (David) Johnson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Peter (Judy) Sommerville of Leawood, Kan. She is also survived by five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Charlotte loved Jesus. Her greatest desire was to serve Christ by serving others. Her life was beautiful for God.
The family thanks the staff of Linn Manor Care Center, Marion, and Hospice of Mercy for their compassionate care of Charlotte during her last days on earth.
