Charles "Les" Hooper was born April 26, 1937, in Marion County, Iowa, the son of Marvin and Helen (Metcalf) Hooper. He graduated from Carlisle High School in 1957 and the Iowa State Patrol Academy in 1966. Les was united in marriage to Nancy Sue Bunce on June 27, 1958,
at the Christian Church in Carlisle. They lived in Carlisle after their marriage and moved to Williamsburg
in 1966, when he was assigned by the patrol. He served in the Army National Guard from 1955 to 1963, with the rank of sergeant E5 USAR. Les worked for the city of Carlisle Police Department for a couple of years before becoming an Iowa state trooper for 23 years, retiring as a senior trooper. He also worked for the U.S. marshal as a district supervisor of Northern Iowa Court Security for the federal court system. He later worked for the Iowa County Transportation Services for three years. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Williamsburg. Les passed away Friday, Dec. 15, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics at the age of 80 years.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; a son, Scott (Hannah) Hooper, all of Williamsburg; a daughter, Julie (Greg) Menary of Carlisle; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Hooper of North English; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Tom) Hartshorn, Nickolas (Megan) Menary, Zachery Hooper, Gabrielle Hooper and Ashley Hooper; a great-granddaughter, Hayley Hartshorn; and a brother, Dick Hooper of California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, William Jeffery Hooper; and a sister, Norma Pegram.
A Celebration of Life service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Williamsburg. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg.
