Charles N. Green, 82, of 302 Sixth Ave. SE, Cascade, died Thursday, April 21, 2016, at 10:25 a.m. at his home in Cascade.
Friends and relatives may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 25, at Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, where a wake service will be held at 3 p.m. Services for Charles will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. A private burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Monticello at a later date, with full military honors afforded by Cascade American Legion Post 528.
Charlie was born Dec. 28, 1933, in a two-story home on the family farm near Garryowen, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Anna (Leytem) Green. He received his education starting with kindergarten at Garryowen and then at St. Mary's in Cascade.
Charlie worked for various farmers and businesses in Cascade before going into the service. He served in the Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War. After returning from the service he continued working locally.
In March 1958, Charlie began working at John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works. He continued to work there until February 1990, when he retired with 32 years of service. Charlie spent the next 19 years as a part-time truck driver for Welter Storage and Equipment, traveling to many of the Eastern and Midwestern states. He was very proud of the fact that he earned a paycheck for more than 60 years.
Charlie was married to Irene Hanken; the couple had five children, and were later divorced. Charlie married Mary Mathis in December 1986. They made their home in Monticello and later Cascade.
Charlie was a 58-year member of Sacred Heart Parish in Monticello, American Legion Post 528 in Cascade and UAW Local 94.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Green, of Cascade; five children, Susie Benischek of Monticello, Sandy (Bruce) Kedley, Sharon (Mike) Bertling, Keith (Grace) Green, all of Cascade, and Doug (Audrey) Green of Hopkinton; and four stepchildren, Joyce (Russ) Pickett, Ray (Dawn) Mathis, Larry (Sherry) Mathis and Gary Mathis, all of Harpers Ferry, W.Va. He also is survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Robert Offerman of Prairieburg; and a sister-in-law, Marcella Green of Cascade.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Ted (Mildred) Green, Virginia (Vincent) Kremer, Loras Green, Mary Estelle (Frank) Simon, Joseph Green, Arnold (Lois) Green, John Robert Green, Claude (Shirley) Green, Oscar (Bernice) Green and Mary Jo Offerman.
