Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Charles J. Gipson, 79, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 4105 N. Division St., Davenport. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Big Rock. Visitation will be Monday, Aug. 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main St., Davenport, where a prayer service will be at 7 p.m. to conclude visitation. Additional visitation will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time at Our Lady of Victory.
Charles died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at Genesis West Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer.
Charles Junior Gipson was born Sept. 30, 1934, in Kessinger, Ky., the son of Melvin and Ruby (Sweet) Gipson. He served his country in the Army from 1958 to 1960 in Germany.
Charles was united in marriage to Marjorie M. Timmerman on Oct. 27, 1956, at St. Patrick's in Big Rock.
Charles retired from Mid-State Transmission Co., Davenport, in 2010. He also had worked for Brach Candy Co. and Oscar Mayer. In his earlier years he had farmed in Cedar County in the Tipton area.
Charles enjoyed fishing and bowling and especially being with his family.
Memorials may be made to St. Patrick's Cemetery Association, Our Lady of Victory or the American Cancer Society.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie, Davenport; his children, Annette LaFollette. Dixon, Iowa, Rodney Gipson (Judy), Davenport, Jeffrey Gipson (Michele), Bennett, and Yvonne Carlson (Tom), Davenport; grandchildren, Juston Gipson, Jesseca Gipson, Jacob Gipson and Kaleb Gipson; stepgrandchildren, Kate Benton and Michelle Morriss; four stepgreat-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, James Gipson and Sherry, Oquawka, Ill., Hillard Gipson (Carol), Berwick, Ill., Margaret Davis (Jerry), Monmouth, Ill., Clifford Gipson and Ginger, New Boston, Ill., Rida Penney (Bob), Silvis, Ill., Wanda Gipson, Monmouth, Ill., Rosemary Ballard (Jerry) , Little York, Ill., Teresa Stevens (Gene), Des Moines, and Mike Gipson (Jackie), Little York, Ill. and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Zelma Davidson, in 1994.
