The highlight of his school years was seeing Nile Kinnick play in three games at Iowa and running in the Drake Relays. He served in the Army from January 1943 to February 1946 as a radar operator. Charlie always thanked Uncle Sam for the leave in August 1944, when by chance, he met the love of his life and guiding light, Laverne.
