Charles Hesse, MD, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2021, at The Bird House - Hospice Home of Johnson County.
Chuck was born March 4, 1936, at Mercy Hospital, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Helen Dettmer Hesse and Fred J. Hesse. He attended St. Paul's Lutheran School, grades 1-8, was a 1954 graduate of Waverly High School and attained his BS in Zoology from Iowa State University in 1958 and earned his Medical Doctorate in 1962 from The University of Iowa. Chuck's medical training included stays in Portland, Ore., and Iowa City, Iowa, where he completed his fellowship in endocrinology and a license to practice Obstetrics and Gynecology. Chuck was a lieutenant in the Medical Corps of the United Sates Navy, serving in Yokosuka, Japan, prior to establishing his career in private practice with Drs. Lowell Luhman, Stanley Greenwald and Doug Johnson from 1970 to 1996 where he dedicated his practice to serving Mercy Hospital of Iowa City.
Chuck had passion for caregiving dedicating his time and resources to his community. Professionally he served as President of the Johnson County Mental Health Board; President of the Mercy Hospital Medical Staff, 1993-94; Board member of the Great Plains Organization for Perinatal Care; President and member of the Mercy Hospital Foundation Board; Family Practice instructor for The University of Iowa Hospital & Clinics; and Medical Director of the Mercy Hospital Physician Hospital Organization.
He served the Iowa City community on the United Way of Johnson County Board; The NEST of Johnson County Board; was 50-year member of the Iowa City noon Rotary; and member of the American Legion. As a trumpeter he served for a period of time on the board of the New Horizons Band.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 64 years, Anne; and children, Elizabeth Fetter, husband Jay and children Jacob and Noah; Eric Hesse, wife JoAnna and children Ruth, Charles and Thomas; David Hesse, wife Lanette and children Madison, Emma and Will; John Hesse, wife Julie and children Gabrielle, Nicholas and Jackson.
The memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021 at 1 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, immediately followed by a brief reception enabling you to greet the family at Zion. The service will be recorded and may be viewed later at www.lensingfuneral.com.
