Charles Edward Panzer was called home to be with our Lord on Nov. 18, 2021.
Charles Edward Panzer was born Oct. 21, 1941, to Clarence and Alice (Meeks) Panzer in Iowa City, Iowa. After graduating from Iowa City High School, he attended the University of Iowa, Kirkwood Community College, and El Paso Community College.
Charles served in the U.S. Navy aboard destroyers, submarine service, and amphibious craft during the Vietnam era. After serving in active duty Navy, he joined and served in the Naval Reserve and later the Iowa Army National Guard, retiring with a total service of 36 years at the rank of Master Sergeant.
He worked as an electronics technician, electrician, bar manager, and as a unit administrator for the Army National Guard. Then went into business as an accounting service, later a convenience store manager, an over-the-road truck driver, and the ministry.
Throughout his life, Charles was involved in many community and civic organizations, including the Iowa City Jaycees, Iowa Jaycees, North Hills (Arkansas) Jaycees, Old Capitol Toastmasters, Sertoma, and the American Legion.
Charles is survived by his son, Gregory Panzer of West Point, Ga., and brother, Robert (Ivy) of Hensley, Ark.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, brother, Roger; and son, James Patrick Panzer.
A recovering alcoholic, he took his last drink of alcohol on Aug. 22, 1988. He credits Alcoholics Anonymous for helping with his recovery and continued sobriety.
He will be remembered for his fun-loving and optimistic attitude, his enjoyment of life, and his love for his sons, his family and others. Most of all, he will be remembered for his strong Faith and total belief in God.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, with burial to follow at the Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City where military honors will be provided. Visitation will be on Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Chuck's memory to the Solon American Legion, P.O. Box 113, Solon, IA 52333.
