Dike
Our beloved father and grandfather, Charles (Doug) Morgan, 73, passed away surrounded by family at Cedar Valley Hospice in Waterloo, Iowa, on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017, after a lengthy and heroic battle with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS).
Born Nov. 28, 1943, in Washington, D.C., to Charles and Gladys Arlene (Mic) Morgan, Doug graduated from Sumner High School in Sumner, Iowa. He attended and played golf at the University of Iowa. On May 17, 1965, Doug was united in marriage to Connie Weber at the United Methodist Church in Preston, Minn.
The majority of Doug's life was spent working and raising a family in Dike, Iowa. He taught his four sons the arts of catching fish, golf, hard work and how to grade coins. Throughout his career, he was the owner/operator of Midwest Turkey Hatchery, plant manager and chairman of the board for Iowa Turkey Products and served a term as president of the Iowa Turkey Federation. Doug had been a resident of Dike, Postville and Sumner, Iowa. In retirement, he and Connie enjoyed their winter home in Cortez, Fla. He cherished his grandchildren, the family ski trips to Colorado, expeditions to Yellowstone and summers in Okoboji. Doug was a proud member of Dike United Methodist Church.
Doug is survived by his wife of 52 years, Connie; four sons, Charles Jeffery of Iowa City, Jim of Dike, Joel (Jessica) of Montesano, Wash., and Jason (Becky) of Springville; adoptive father and uncle, Howard McMinimee of Denison; grandchildren, Sean Morgan, Brooke Morgan, Tyler Morgan, Amelia Morgan, Nic Morgan, Charles Wim Morgan, Seth Morgan and Samuel Morgan; brother-in-law, Laverne Buhr of Sumner; niece, Tara Buhr of Prescott, Ariz.; and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Deb; and nephew, Michael.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Dike United Methodist Church in Dike, with his spiritual adviser and friend, Pastor Dan Ridnouer, officiating. A visitation will be held on Friday, Oct. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Dike United Methodist Church. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29, at Oakland Cemetery in Denison, Iowa. Engelkes-Abels Dike Chapel is caring for Doug and his family. Online condolences may be made to the Morgan family at www.abelsfuneralhomes.com.
