Charles “Chuck” H. Shafer, 96, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Nov. 12, 2023. Private family services will be held at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories where a livestream can be viewed at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, 2023.
Chuck was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Marengo, Iowa, to Hubert and Ruth Shafer. He graduated from Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids and joined the Army Air Corps at the age of 17 during World War II. He completed his education at Coe College in Cedar Rapids where he was a math major and a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. Chuck was married to Betty
Svoboda May 28, 1950, at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They were fortunate to have 73 years together. Chuck and Betty lived for 38 years in the Coralville Lake area. In 2015 they moved to the Meth-Wick Community.
Chuck's entire career was spent in Purchasing and he retired as Purchasing Manager at Rockwell Goss in 1991. Chuck loved all sports on TV but especially looked forward to football season. He also enjoyed building projects, crossword puzzles, cooking and reading. He enjoyed the many family vacations in Park Rapids, Minn., and the Lake of the Ozarks with his children and later their families. Chuck loved animals of all kinds and faithfully fed all of the wild birds and squirrels.
Chuck is survived by his wife Betty, two sons; Scott (Pam) Shafer of Cedar Rapids; Michael (Terri) Shafer of Clarkesville, Ga.; and daughter Debra (Doug) Rogers of Charles City, Iowa. Chuck is also survived by six grandchildren; David Shafer (Barry Randall); Dr. Tamara (Dr. Alex) Woods; Leslie (Mark) Johnson; Britney (Josh) Baer; Katie (Brad) Jensen; Nick Rogers; 13 great-grandchildren, and a niece and nephew.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Betty Scheible.
Chuck was a loving, devoted and caring husband, father, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
