Charles J. Butterfield, 79, of Independence, died Wednesday evening, March 30, 2016, at Lexington Estates Care Center, Independence.
Charles was born March 19, 1937, near Troy Mills, Iowa, the son of Lawrence W. and Mildred F. (McGrath) Butterfield. He was a 1954 graduate of Rowley (Iowa) High School. On May 26, 1956, he was married to Kathryn M. Kaesser in St. John's Catholic Church, Independence. Charles was employed as a mechanic with the Kaesser John Deere dealership near Rowley for several years before farming for 40 years near Walker.
The couple moved into Independence in 2004.
He enjoyed coaching Little League, but his true loves were his family and farming.
Charles is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kathryn Butterfield; three children, Gary L. Butterfield, Walker, Denise (John) Laing, Jacksonville, Fla., and Scott (Shari) Butterfield, Solon; four grandchildren, Bryan Nelson, Brandon and Brenton Laing and Kathryn Butterfield; a great-granddaughter, Brea Nelson; and a sister, Kathryn Marks, Wilton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Phyllis Polk; and a brother, Larry Butterfield.
Private services will be at a later date. Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory of Independence is assisting the family with arrangements.
