Charles Edward Beatty, 88, of Vinton, died in St. Luke's hospice unit, Cedar Rapids, surrounded by his family on Dec. 31, 2014. Funeral services will be at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, with the Rev. Stephen K. Preus officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg. Visitation will be Friday evening, Jan. 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. Sixth St.) in Vinton.
The family suggests memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church, Vinton.
Charles was born to Joseph Charles (Charlie) and Minnie (Weis) Beatty on July 17, 1926, in Shellsburg, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm west of Shellsburg and graduated with honors from Shellsburg High School in the class of 1944. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
In August 1950, he married Marcella Robbins and raised a family of five children in Shellsburg and Vinton. For many years he served on the Shellsburg school board. Charles worked as a farmer, sold fertilizer and was owner/operator of Northern Insulation for several years.
His wife, Marcella, passed away in 1976. In 1977, Charles married Suzanne Hagan Beatty until her death in 2006.
Charles was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton, where he sang in the choir and served as an elder.
He loved to visit with his friends and family and will always be remembered for his kindness and care for everyone he saw throughout the day. His faith and love for his family were always most important in his life.
Charles was predeceased by his parents, his wives, three brothers, Walter, Ronald and Keith; son, Michael; and stepson, Randy.
He is survived by sons, Charles (Ann) of Rochester, Minn., Marion (Peggy) of Decorah and Brian (Robin) of Des Moines; daughter, Annette (Lance) Wingfield of Fort Worth, Texas; stepchildren, Greg Beatty of Decatur, Neb., Lindsay (Colleen) Beatty of Harlan, Steve (Diane) Beatty of Vinton and Brenda Jo (Dave) Aitchison of Cedar Rapids; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Mae (Raymond) Buelow of Cedar Rapids and Mary (Chuck) Koopman of Newhall; brother, Donald (Sherri) Beatty of Shellsburg; sisters-in-law, Sharon (Ronald) Beatty of Palo and Cheryl (Keith) Beatty of Shellsburg; and special friend and companion, Bernice Ahl of Vinton.
The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude for the personalized and professional care provided to Charles and his family during his care at Virginia Gay Hospital and Annex in Vinton and St. Luke's Hospital and hospice unit in Cedar Rapids.
