Charles Winfield Akers, 95, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, at the Rehabilitation Center of Lisbon in Lisbon. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with visitation one hour before the service. Inurnment: Oak Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military rites.
Charles was born Nov. 7, 1921, in Cedar Rapids, the son of William and Tillie (Stusak) Akers. He graduated from McKinley High School, Cedar Rapids. On July 22, 1942, Charles enlisted with the U.S. Army and served during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1945. He married Barbara Jean Lillis on Oct. 1, 1949, in Cedar Rapids. Barbara passed away in February 2017 after 67 years of marriage.
Charles was a union carpenter and millwright and retired from Blahnik Construction. He was an avid league bowler in the Mount Vernon area for over 30 years. Charles enjoyed fishing, woodworking and walking at Westdale Mall. He found great joy when he was able to participate in the Honor Flight.
Charles is survived by his children, Scott (Eileen "Dolly") Akers of Titusville, Fla., Philip (Brenda) Akers of Holt, Mo., and Kathryn (Terry) Hartgrave of Hiawatha, Iowa; grandchildren, Philip (Cassie) Hartgrave, Michael Hartgrave (Holly), Damon (Svetlana) Akers, Kaimee Akers and Kinsey Marcella; and six
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; parents, William and Tillie; son, Dennis Akers; and brother, John Akers.
