Charles A. "Chuck" Verts, 72, of Iowa City, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2018, at Pleasantview Home in Kalona.
Graveside services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Unity Cemetery on Jasper Ave. SW in rural Johnson County.
In lieu of flowers, plants and memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org/donate). Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is handling arrangements.
Born April 5, 1946, in Sioux City, Iowa, Chuck grew up in Sioux City, graduating from East High School in 1965. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps after high school and served in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969.
While in the service, under advisement from mutual friends, he began writing to Joann "Jo" Fulton, a nurse in a Sioux City hospital. Returning to the United States, their paths crossed, which led to their marriage Aug. 15, 1970, in Omaha, Neb.
Chuck worked as a registered nurse for more than three decades at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics and at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, retiring in 2008.
He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, sketching, bird watching and identification, and supporting his kids' activities and sports.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jo of Iowa City; a son, Drew Verts (Sheila) of Las Vegas, Nev.; and a daughter, Sara Hill (Derek) of Rosemount, Minn.; a brother, Frank Verts (Karen) of Whittsett, N.C.; a sister, Kathleen Verts Olsen (Bob) of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
