Chambers, Barbara Jean
Barbara Jean Chambers, 78, died peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at Oaknoll Health Center. Funeral Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City, with the Rev. Sam Massey officiating. Following the service, there will be a time of fellowship at the church. Burial will be at Memory Gardens.
Barbara was born Sept. 29, 1934, in Vinton, Iowa, the daughter of William and Marie Hills Norris. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College and, later in 1978, received her bachelor's degree in education from the University of Iowa.
Barbara taught school in Waterloo, later moving to Iowa City, where she was an elementary schoolteacher in various schools in the Iowa City Community School District. For the better part of her career she taught at Mark Twain Elementary School.
Barbara was especially dedicated to her students and colleagues. She was a “teacher's teacher” and believed in the power of education. Barbara was a devoted mother and thoughtful friend. Following retirement Barbara enjoyed elderhostel trips, traveling, gardening, and was a committed community volunteer.
Survivors include her son, David of Orlando, Fla.; and her many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, John; and her sister, Virginia.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Iowa City School Community District Foundation.
