Chalupka, Gladys Elizabeth
Gladys Elizabeth Chalupka, 79, of Solon, died Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Mercy Iowa City. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 25, at Brosh Chapel in Solon, located at 100 S. Cedar St. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Solon.
Gladys was born Nov. 12, 1933, in Solon, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Yansa) Vanorny. Her parents died when Gladys was 14 years old. She and her brother, Elmer, ran the farm and went to school. They milked 12 cows before and after school. Gladys married George B. Chalupka on April 6, 1954, in Iowa City. She enjoyed camping, polka fests, sewing, cooking and she loved reading cookbooks and enjoyed listening to Barefoot Becky.
Gladys is survived by her husband, George, of 59 years; her children, Glenda Burgy of Saratoga, Calif., and Gerald (Kim) Chalupka of Solon; grandchildren, Kyle Burgy, Kirsten Burgy, Brooke (Dalton) Meyer, Jerad Chalupka and Logan Chalupka; her great-grandchildren, Ava, Gabriel, and baby Meyer due in July; her brother, Elmer (Iona) Vanorny of Solon; a niece, LaVina (Dave) Vanorny-Barcus of Madrid; and best friend, Pat Fiala.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and nephew, Dan Vanorny.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Solon Fire Department and / or Camp Courageous.
