Chad Stanley Michael, 37, of Walker, Iowa, passed away on Friday, July 1, 2022, in his home.
Chad was born on Oct. 23, 1984, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Stanley Michael and Linda (Schaul) Sturbaum. He was a 2003 graduate of North Linn High School. Growing up he was very active and enjoyed wrestling and playing football in high school. He went on to wrestle at The Apprentice School in Newport News, Va., where he studied to become a shipboard pipefitter on naval ships. The wrestling program at the Apprentice School drew him to pursue wrestling for his first two years. After his wrestling career in Virginia, he began competing in Ju-Jitsu and grappling tournaments.
After four years in Virginia, he decided to make the move back to Iowa and pursue a different career. He attended Kirkwood Community College for three years and followed that by attending the University of Iowa where he attained a Doctorate of Pharmacy degree in 2014. During his time at the U of I, Chad was very active in food drives and loved spending time with his roommates, friends and family. He stayed active in Ju-Jitsu while he was still attending the U of I. While at the U of I, he met the love of his life, Silver Chung. Chad went on to be closer to Silver who was in Rochester, N.Y., to work as a pharmacist in the Akron, Ohio, area.
In 2018, Silver and Chad moved to the Miami, Fla., area where Silver is employed at the Florida International University. Chad went on to work for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation in Florida. On June 29, 2019, Chad and Silver were married in Coggon, Iowa. In March of 2022, Chad returned to Walker, Iowa.
Chad is survived by his wife, Silver Michael of Miami, Fla.; his father, Stanley of Walker; his mother and step-father, Linda and John Sturbaum of Walker; his siblings, Jared of Blair, Wis., Brett of Walker, Kallee (Dequayvious Martin) of Cedar Rapids and Alexander Sturbaum of Waterloo; his nieces, Allaunna Brooks and Izabella Martin; his father and mother-in-law, Yosup and Myunghee Chung of Ansan, South Korea; a sister-in-law, Wonmi Chung of Ansan, South Korea; many aunts, uncles, cousins and his faithful dog Joy.
Chad was preceded in death by his grandparents, Leonard and Isabelle Michael and Paul and Marilyn Schaul; a sister, Kara Michael; and a brother, Patrick Michael.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at
10:30 a.m. Monday, July 11, in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial following in the Sacred Heart Cemetery both in Walker. Father Jim Brokman will officiate. Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 10, in the Sacred Heart Church Hall in Walker and also one hour prior to the service on Monday.
