Catherine Louise Purington, 93, of Mount Vernon, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017, at Hallmark Care Center, Mount Vernon. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, with Certified Celebrant Paula Meyer officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Catherine is survived by her son, Ben (Marcia) Purington Jr. of Lisbon; a daughter, Pam Purington of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Matthew Purington, Kellie Stodola, Katie Busch and fiance Justin Shroyer, Nathan (Kylie) Newhard, Kyle Newhard, Shannon (Earnie) Goodloe and Angie Williams and significant other Dustin Clark; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold "Pinky" Purington Sr., in 2005; a brother, Carroll Beghtel; and two sisters, Ruth McCool and Wilma Madison.
Catherine was born Dec. 31, 1923, the daughter of Clarence and Iva Beghtel, in Guthrie County, Iowa. After graduation, she married Harold Purington Sr. on Aug. 13, 1941, in Kahoka, Mo. Catherine was employed by the Cedar Rapids Community School District for many years in the lunch service department.
Catherine enjoyed gardening, fishing, mushroom hunting and especially spending time with her beloved family.
Catherine had many acquaintances and friendships over the years of her life.
She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and neighbor. She will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
The family would like to thank all the residents and staff from the Hallmark Care Center for all their love, support and tender care given to Catherine.
