Carter, Elsie 'Darlene'
Elsie “Darlene” Carter, 82, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Friends may come from 1 to 3 p.m. at the chapel on Monday. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Survivors include her husband, John of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Patricia McInroy of Cedar Rapids, Wendy (Ron) Petersen of Cedar Rapids and Lisa Downing of Fairbank; and siblings, Edward (Barb) Vosmek of Ely and Mary Lou Condon, Joan (Robert) Schields, Cheryle (Lawrence) Steggall, Caryle (Roger) Steggall, Sandra Vosmek, all of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband, Howard Scott.
Elsie Darlene Vosmek was born March 6, 1929 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Louis and Elsie (Henderson) Vosmek. She married John Carter on July 15, 1955, in Iowa City. Elsie worked as a bookkeeper in retail before she retired.
She enjoyed crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, Elvis music, collecting angels, and spending time with her family. Elsie also loved to gamble at casinos and to find and shop at garage sales.
A memorial fund has been established in her name.
