Carpenter, Florence M.
Florence M. Carpenter, 91, of 4103 Hawk Ave. SW, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center. Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, with military rites by VFW Post 788. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include two daughters, Wendy Kay (David) Larison and Karen (Tom Nassif) Ruhd-Nassif, both of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Kenneth (Lana) of Bartow, Fla., and Richard (Lu) of West Burlington; and a sister, Elsie Coe of Sherman, Ill. She is also survived by six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a brother, Gordon Thornburgh.
Florence was born Sept. 30, 1918, in Springfield, Ill., the daughter of Andrew and Mildred Cline Thornburgh. She married Richard A. Carpenter on May 23, 1946, in Springfield, Ill. He died in 1996. Florence was a member of the American Legion in Winter Haven, Fla., and proudly served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. She enjoyed crocheting, making many Afghans for the domestic violence shelter over the years and cheering on the Chicago Cubs.
Florence was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed by her beloved family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Camp Courageous in Florence's name.
