CAROLYN HOWIE
Marion
Carolyn Howie, 84, of Marion, departed this life Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, following a stroke. Memorial services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12, at Echo Hill Presbyterian Church. A light reception will follow.
She is survived by her children, Marvalee (Jerry) Vuichard and Forrest (Andrea Wolverton) Howie of Tucson, Ariz.; her grandchildren, Stacie (Erik) Morimoto of Crystal Lake, Ill., Michael Vuichard and significant other, McKenzie Hogan and son Jackson Geinosky of Marion, Caitlin (Bryan) Neighbors of Tucson, Ariz., Lindsay Howie, also of Tucson, Megan Wolverton of Tempe, Ariz., and Ross Wolverton of Prescott, Ariz.; two great-granddaughters, Ainslie and Piper Morimoto; and many nieces and nephews.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin A. Howie; her parents, Wilford and Cora Ray King; three brothers; and a sister.
Carolyn began her life in Rock Springs, Wyo., on Sept. 26, 1929. She always loved the Rocky Mountains. Losing both her parents by the age of 13, she moved to live with family in Sparta, Ill. It is there she met Marvin A. Howie, they married in 1949. They lived in Sparta for over 40 years, before retiring to Aurora, Colo., in 1991. She continued living in Colorado after Marvin's death in 1998, until 2011, when she moved to Marion.
Carolyn's talents led her to pursue many interests. She worked as a bank teller
early in her
career and,
later, as a Realtor, a building site coordinator and property manager for her and Marvin's apartment property. She was an accomplished artist, seamstress and quilter; a restorer of antiques; and worked as a paralegal well into her 70s. Carolyn loved all things beautiful and enjoyed baking, often sharing her homemade bread with others.
A devout Christian, Carolyn was a deacon at Echo Hill Presbyterian Church in Marion and a financial trustee at Smoky Hill Baptist Church in Aurora. Carolyn will be greatly missed by many for her kind spirit and wit.
"Honor her for all her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate." (Proverbs 31:31)
Donations in Carolyn's memory may be made to the Echo Hill Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
Carolyn and her family are grateful for the kind
attention of many visitors and callers, as well as, to the staff and volunteers of Unity Point Hospital, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Hospice House of Mercy for the competency of care and compassion and extended to them during her illness.
