Carolyn M. Cleveland, 72, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2017, at Northbrook Manor in Cedar Rapids with UnityPoint Hospice Services. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, stage IIIC, in December 2007. Supported by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., she celebrated 10 years of ovarian cancer treatments and procedures allowing her to have wonderful experiences. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at the Hotel Kirkwood. Please come to greet family and friends. There will be no formal service.
Carolyn is survived by her husband of 18 years, Ray Larson of Cedar Rapids; son, Michael Hack; daughter-in-law; Linda Piatt; grandchildren, Darren Hack and Audrey Hack of San Diego; son, Jonathan Hack of Denver, Colo.; She was preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas Hack. Other survivors include stepdaughter, Jenn Pearson; stepson, Jay Pearson; and granddaughter, Allegra Cosgrove of Cedar Rapids; stepgrandson, Reese Pearson, preceded her in death. She is also survived by stepson and stepdaughter, Ryan and Carrie Larson; grandchildren, Brynn, Anika and Trace Larson in Singapore; sister, Ellen Cleveland; and brother-in-law, Tommy Thompson of Des Moines; and brother, John Cleveland of Waterloo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rhodes Mortimer (Mort) and Dorothy L. (Kitzinger) Cleveland. Carolyn was previously married to David Hack.
Carolyn earned her B.A., M.A. and advanced administration certificates from the University of Iowa. She worked as a teacher, consultant and administrator in many Cedar Rapids community schools and for the Area Education Agency. Carolyn worked at Roosevelt Middle School for 15 of those years. After retirement, she taught at Kirkwood and worked as an interim director for Foundation Two. Carolyn was a very caring, creative and loving person who gave much to the community and those around her. She enjoyed an active life as a lifelong learner.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, Mayo Clinic's Ovarian Cancer research or other charity of your choice.
