Carol Jean (Barkhurst) Miller, 79, passed away peacefully Monday, July 31, 2017, at the Bird House, Hospice Home of Johnson County. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at First Church United in West Liberty. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m.
Friday at the church. Interment will be at Oakridge Cemetery in West Liberty. A luncheon will follow in the fellowship hall at the church. Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge

Carol was born Sept. 6, 1937, in Iowa City, Iowa, to Harold and Ruth (Rockafellow) Barkhurst. She graduated from West Liberty High School in 1955. She attended secretarial school in California in 1957. She married Tom L. Roberts of West Liberty on Nov. 30, 1957. They later divorced.
Carol married Fred W. Miller on Oct. 22, 1979. They lived in the West Liberty area for the next 38 years. You could always find Carol involved with activities at First Church United and yearly at the church stand during the West Liberty Fair. She loved being a part of the Covenant Singers for 10 years. She enjoyed the Kent Feed trips and boat cruises with Fred on the Mississippi River. Carol loved to travel with Fred and their many trips included Hawaii, the Bahamas, Canada, Europe and West on a wagon train trail. Carol also enjoyed taking her grandchildren to performances at Hancher Auditorium. You could find Carol at the band, choir or sports events that her grandchildren participated in at West Liberty schools. Carol worked as a legal secretary in West Liberty for attorneys Keele and Keele for many years while working evenings at Louis Rich Foods. She also worked during tax season for Randy Pogenmiller, Joan Keuning and Barclay Law Office.
Carol is survived by her children, Melody (Curt) Klusmeyer of Janesville, Wis., and Brian Roberts of Muscatine; stepchildren, Rhonda (Ron) Jensen of West Liberty, Bruce (Sue) Miller of Muscatine and Larry Miller of West Liberty; her four grandchildren, Dustin (Katherine) Brooks, West Liberty, Megan (Jens) Zalzala, West Liberty, Wade Jensen, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Kirsten Jensen, West Liberty; her five great-grandchildren, Ty, Cale, Kaden Brooks and Jolene and Malachi Zalzala, all of West Liberty; a sister, Wanda (Wayne) Jarrard of West Liberty; a brother, Kenneth (Diane) Barkhurst of Huntley, Ill.; and a sister-in-law, Kay Hart of the Quad Cities. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grand nephews.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts and husband, Fred.
