Carol Josephine Rees, 86, of Marion, Iowa, passed away from a sudden illness on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 22, 2024, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, where the family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Carol was born on March 13, 1938, in Decatur, Illinois, the daughter of Harold and Thelma (Hosterman) Smeed. Her father was a railroad insurance inspector, causing them to live in several locations, including Decatur, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Miles City, Montana. Carol graduated from Custer County High School in Miles City and went on to attend Eastern Montana College of Education in Billings, Montana. Don and Carol met at a church couples’ group and were married on June 14, 1986.
After retiring in 1996, the couple enjoyed the full-time motorhome lifestyle for several years. Carol really came to enjoy this way of living and often felt bad when she saw a nice camper on the road. Carol will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Carol is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband of 38 years, Don, and a host of extended family members, including in-laws.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, James Smeed.
