Carol Ann (Carter) Alexander, 65, of Iowa City, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. The family will greet visitors from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shelter House or to Friends of the Animal Center Foundation.
Carol was born Aug. 21, 1950, in Grand Rapids, Mich., the daughter of Dick and Patricia (Fairchild) Carter. She graduated from Ravenna High School with the class of 1968. She graduated from Michigan State University in 1972 with a psychology degree and also received two master's degrees from the University of Michigan. Carol worked for 30 years in the Office of Statewide Clinical Education Programs (OSCEP) at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, retiring in 2015 as the associate director of community-based medical education.
Carol was a voracious reader and an avid supporter of both the Michigan Wolverines football team and the Democratic Party. She adored travel, with some of her most recent adventures taking place in New Orleans, the wine country of Napa and the theme parks of Orlando. She was always eager to try something new, whether it was earning her red belt in tae kwon do or making Julia Child's boeuf bourguignon. She was a lifelong lover of animals with her beagle, Bogie, serving as her four-footed companion of the past decade.
Carol is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Zachary and Stephanie Alexander of Newton; her son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Erik and Anne Alexander of Milwaukee, Wis.; her grandchildren, Isaac, Ian and Ingrid Alexander of Newton; her best friend, Cindy Geyer; and many other dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
