Carlton Bruce Johnson, 75, longtime former Iowa City insurance professional, died Monday, April 30, 2018, at Oaknoll Care Center in Iowa City. A funeral service to celebrate Carlton's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 5, at Zion Lutheran Church, 310 N. Johnson St., Iowa City, with Pastor Jennifer Lutz officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time at the church. Following a luncheon, committal services will be held at Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty.

Carlton was born Jan. 22, 1943, in Charles City, Iowa, to Harry and Gertrude (Blanck) Johnson. His family farmed in the Plainfield, Nashua, Iowa area. Carlton graduated from Plainfield High School in 1960. He attended Wartburg College and graduated with a B.A. degree in business in 1964. Carlton married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Shephard, on Feb. 11, 1962. After graduating from Wartburg, he and Sharon moved to Waukesha, Wis., and Carlton taught business courses at Waukesha High School. They returned to Cedar Rapids in 1968 and moved to Iowa City in 1983. He was associated with AW Welt Ambrisco Insurance in Iowa City for many years.
He was active in both local and state insurance groups, holding different offices over the years. They included state president of the Independent Insurance Agents. Carlton was a member of the Iowa City Noon Rotary Club and served on the Iowa City Hospice board. He was also a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church. Family was very important to Carlton.
His surviving family includes his wife of 56 years, Sharon; three children, Kimberly (Kevin) McCarthy, Stephanie (Brian) Daly and Chad (Teresa) Johnson; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Diane (Jack) Baker of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
