Carlton, Janis Kay
Janis Kay Carlton, 72, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital from complications of COPD. Celebration of life will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Beth Mary Straw presiding. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Five Seasons Clubhouse, 3421 Blairs Ferry Rd. NE, Cedar Rapids, 52402. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids in charge of arrangements.
Janis was born Aug. 13, 1937, in Greeley, Iowa, the beloved daughter of Floyd and Leta (Allen) Ripple. Janis married Boyd Carlton on May 29, 1976 in Greeley. Janis tended bar for years at the Fire Place and Log Cabin. She retired from Meth-Wick. She enjoyed country music, cards, crocheting, cooking, double diamond machines, fishing with Boyd and spending time with her grandchildren and friends. She was a member of St James United Methodist Church.
Janis is survived by her husband and loving caregiver, Boyd Carlton; daughter, Julia (Randy) Coons, sons, Blair and Bruce Harbaugh; stepchildren, Kathy (Luke) Durnan, Mike, Marty, Matt (Tina), Mark and Kelly Carlton, all of the Cedar Rapids area; the loves of her life, six grandchildren; 17 stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 22 stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister and brother in law, Joyce (Eugene) Harbaugh of Manchester; brothers, Dr. Robert Klute of Athens, Ga., and Henry (Ginny) Battin of Reed Springs, Mo.; brother-in-law, Gene (Chris) Carlton; former daughter-in-law, Stacy Harbaugh; and beloved friends, Fred and Judy Reel, and the Kula family, all of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents and stepmother, Lorene Ripple; a brother, Bob Battin; grandson, Braxton Harbaughl and nephew, Kirk Harbaugh.
The family would like to thank the Rev. Beth Straw for her support and comfort throughout our mother/wife's last days. She went way above and beyond. Dr Paynter is a gift from God and the staff of St Lukes ICU unit for their kindness and tender care to our mother/wife and her family. The family would also like to thank St. Luke's Hospice for their tender care for Janis.
