Carlson, Robert J.
Robert J. Carlson, 71, of Iowa City, died at University of Iowa Hospital Monday, Dec. 21, 2009 following a stroke. Services will be held at a later date in Ottumwa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the University of Iowa Department of Spanish and Portuguese at www.uiowa.edu/~spanport/ to support language education and encourage intercultural understanding.
Robert was born May 20, 1938 in Ottumwa, the son of Iver and Kathryn Carlson. He graduated from Ottumwa High School, the University of Iowa, and Thunderbird School of Global Management in Phoenix, Ariz. Robert served in the 1st Infantry Division in the Army and was a Foreign Affairs Officer for the State Department stationed in Brazil.
Robert enjoyed tennis, music, and watching the Washington Redskins. He had a lifelong love of learning with special interests in philosophy, history, and international affairs. Robert loved to spend time with his family and enjoyed conversing with anyone who would listen.
Robert is survived by his children, Charlotte Carlson Flint and Thomas J. Carlson; sister, Christine Kerns; grandsons, Andrew and David Flint; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Patricia Wachter; and brother, Jon Carlson.
