Carlson, Bertha M.
Bertha M. Carlson, 89, resident of the Solon Care Center, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 25, 2010. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at the Solon Care Center, 523 E. Fifth St., Solon, IA 52333, at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, the same date that was to have been her 90th birthday. Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, in 1993.
Surviving are her children, Brenda (Richard) Carlson of Michigan and Jeff (Terry) Carlson of Solon. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, who lovingly called her “Grandma Sue.”
Bertha was born Nov. 4, 1920, in Davenport, Iowa, to John and Bertha (Jordan) August. She married Carl Julius Carlson, a Swedish native, on July 5, 1941, in Batavia, Ill. The couple lived most of their life in Aurora, Ill., where they owned and operated Carlson Motors until their retirement in 1974, when they moved to Cedar Rapids.
Bertha's faith was a foundation that helped her through the difficult issues of life. She loved to read, especially Bible verses and devotionals. She will be fondly remembered for her laughter, creative poems and stories she had written, special hot fudge sauce, and cookies made to set aside for visits with friends and family.
Bertha's family would like to thank the Solon Care Center for the gracious and loving care she received. Memorial gifts may be made to the Solon Care Center, Solon, Iowa.
