Carley "C" Pisel, 91, of Lincoln, Neb., formerly of Hiawatha, died June 15, 2016, in Lincoln. Celebration of Life services at the Legacy in Lincoln and Cedar Memorial in Cedar Rapids are pending.
Carley "C" Pisel was born in Gilmore City, Iowa, on March 29, 1925, to Etta (Davis) and Harry Pisel. He attended and graduated from Gilmore City Public School in 1942. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1943. Carley served on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. Following his military service, he returned to Coe College, graduating in 1949. While attending Coe, he lettered in both basketball and football and was a member of the TKE fraternity. He finished his master's in administration education in 1956 at the University of Iowa.
He married Dolores (Barber) on Sept. 17, 1949. They had four children, Mark, Carla, Barb and Denise. They made their home in Hiawatha for most of their married life.
His teaching and coaching career began in Beebeetown and included Cantril and Victor, Iowa. He also taught at Taft and Grant Wood in Cedar Rapids public schools, retiring in 1985. He also worked at LeFebure Corp. The couple moved to the Legacy in Lincoln, in 2011.
Carley was very active in civic organizations, including the planning and zoning committee in Hiawatha, the ARC (Association of Retarded Citizens), volunteer tax program for AARP, Woodward State Hospital and school parent group officer. He enjoyed camping, fishing, travel and supporting his family in "school and church" activities. Carley loved his ties to the Pisel Century Farm in Gilmore City. One of his most enjoyable pastimes was officiating sports events, girls' and boys' basketball and track events. He received an Iowa High School Athletic Association award recognizing his 50 years of officiating service.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dolores (Barber) Pisel; daughters, Carla Pisel-Nixon (Rob), Barbara Pisel-Wilbur (Lee) and Denise Hogg (Jack); grandchildren, Taylor, Carly, Joshua, Curtis, Becca, David and Roger; nine great-grandchildren; siblings, Gary (Barb), Donna (Bob) and Don (Judy); and sisters-in-law, Betty Pisel and Liz Richardson.
Carley was preceded in death by his parents;, son, Mark Curtis Pisel; brother, Zola; sisters, Florence and Edna; and brother-in-law, Bob Richardson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Arc of East Central Iowa, 680 Second St. SE 200, Cedar Rapids, IA 52401; Camp Courageous, 12007 190th St., Monticello, IA 52310; Alzheimer's Association, local chapter; or donor's choice.
