Carl E. Thies, 79, of Frankfort, Ill., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Silver
Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Ill. Funeral service: 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 7, at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, by Pastor Larry Hallman. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday and after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment: Floral Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery, rural Oelwein, with graveside military rites by Ross Reid American Legion Post 9 Honor Guard of Oelwein.

Carl Edward Thies was born Jan.12, 1935, in West Union, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Matilda (Ash) Thies. He attended school in West Union. Carl married Mary Ann Meneuy on Aug. 19, 1955, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fayette. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Air Force. Carl was a truck driver for different companies for 40 years. He was a member of Teamsters Union No. 238.
Carl enjoyed truck driving and playing cards.
Carl is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Thies of Frankfort, Ill.; brother, Roger (Karen) Thies of Texas; two sisters, Betty (John) Redman of Fairplay, Colo., and Julie (Dan) Clemens of Cedar Rapids; and special niece, Jeanette (Pastor Larry) Hallman of Royalton, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marion Tupper.
