Carl Lee DeWoody, 89, of Olin, Iowa, passed away at Anamosa Care Center on Friday, February 20, 2026.
Carl was born April 3, 1936, at home in Coggon, Iowa, the son of Charles Harold DeWoody and Mary Augusta (Kee) DeWoody. He attended school in Coggon and graduated from Olin High School in 1955. Carl continued his education at Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma, before transferring to Upper Iowa University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in teaching in 1959.
Carl devoted his life to education, teaching at Maquoketa Valley, Hubbard, and Vinton schools before moving to Olin, where he completed his teaching career. He taught sixth grade and junior high history, along with K–12 art, impacting generations of students during his more than 30 years in education.
A lifelong learner and creative spirit, Carl enjoyed making cards and artwork, playing computer games, camping, and fishing. He was a member of Olin United Methodist Church and the Olin Masonic Lodge.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 50 years, Bernita Houston DeWoody; his son, Lance DeWoody; his daughter Carrie, his brother, Harold DeWoody; and his sisters, Helen Ciler and Esther Cooling.
Left to cherish his memory are his son-in-law, Paul Fortin, of Olin, Iowa; his granddaughters, Amy Fortin and Libby Fortin; along with extended family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Dawson Funeral Services in Olin on Friday, February 27, 2026, from 5:00-7:00 pm. A private family burial will take place at the Olin Cemetery.
