Carl E. Sweeting, 92, lifetime resident and area businessman of Iowa City, died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2020, at Mercy Iowa City.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, 2020, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, where military honors will be rendered at the conclusion of the evening. Private graveside services will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made

Carl Elmer Sweeting was born Nov. 27, 1927, in Tiffin, Iowa, the son of Noble J. Sweeting and Lola M. (King) Sweeting. He attended Iowa City schools, graduating with the Class of 1947 from City High School. He enlisted in the Army Air Forces during World War II.
In 1948, he married Maxine M. Koob. The couple made their home in Iowa City, raising their family. Carl, along with his uncle, started Sweeting Flower Shop. He continued this for a number of years before selling his interest to his uncle and joining the United States Postal Service. He worked here for more than 28 years before retiring. In retirement, he worked for Hanson Auto to keep busy.
Carl enjoyed life in many ways, from roller skating the many rinks around Eastern Iowa, to bowling in many leagues over the years, qualifying for the state tournament for more than 20 years in a row. Family travels and playing cards with family and friends brought much happiness in Carl's life.
His family include his children, Tonya Pierce, Christine Roe (Ron), Noble Sweeting (Rochelle) and Scott Sweeting (Deb); daughter-in-law, Michelle Sweeting; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Roger Sweeting (Joyce).
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a son, Allan; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and nine siblings.
Social distancing standards will be in place along with the expectation of all in attendance will be expected to wear a mask. If you arrive without one, one will be provided to you by the funeral home.
