CARL H. BAUR
Marion
Carl H. Baur, 87, of Marlborough, Mass., passed away Friday, June 3, 2016, after a short hospitalization.
Carl was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Sept. 8, 1928. He was one of five children born to Heinrich Wilhelm and Florence (Smith) Baur. As a young man he was a seaman in the U.S. Merchant Marine. In 1951, he married Audrey Grote in Chicago, to whom he remained a devoted husband for more than 55 years, until her death in 2006.
He served a tour of duty in the Korean War as a radar technician for the Air Force. After the war, he used those skills to help maintain air traffic and early warning radar systems in Minnesota and Florida.
In 1965, he and Audrey and their two children moved to Marion, where he lived for the next 48 years. He worked for the Department of Defense as an industrial specialist until his retirement in 1986.
Carl enjoyed gardening, playing his digital piano and was an avid aviation and railroad buff. He loved working with children, serving as scoutmaster for many years and volunteering countless hours at the Willis Dady Shelter in Cedar Rapids.
He is survived by his son, Eric Baur and his wife, Katie Robey, of Marlborough; his daughter, Kathy Williams, and her husband, Randy, of Camanche; his grandchildren, Daniel Stone of Bloomington, Minn., Jason Baur of Marlborough, Mass., and Rebecca Baur of Lompoc, Calif.; one brother, Robert Baur of New Port Richey, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service and interment in a national veterans cemetery is planned for later this year. Arrangements are in the care of the John P. Rowe Funeral Home Inc., 57 Main St., Marlborough, MA 01752.
Memorial donations may be made to the Willis Dady Shelter, 1247 Fourth Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403.
