CARL R. ANDREWS JR.
Iowa City
Carl R. Andrews Jr., 65, of Iowa City, died suddenly early Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, at his home.
Carl's family will greet friends Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. A celebration of Carl's life also is being planned for this summer.
In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials may be directed to the Carl Andrews Memorial Fund.
Carl was born April 20, 1951, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Carl and Arlene (Cole) Andrews Sr. Growing up in Sioux City, Carl enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving two tours in Vietnam, from 1969 to 1971. He continued to proudly serve his country for an additional 12 years.
He married his best friend, Kelly Prescott, on Dec. 11, 2010, in Johnson County, and was a loving husband.
Carl worked for a steel plant in Keokuk for 20 years and as a heavy equipment operator for Iowa City Excavating. Most recently, he operated heavy equipment for Neuzil & Sons in Iowa City.
First and foremost, Carl was very proud to be a veteran and was a devoted stepfather. He enjoyed fishing and movies, especially John Wayne and Steven Seagal movies. He was intrigued as to how things operated, and one of his favorite challenges was to take things apart and put them back together again, one of which often included his wife's car.
Carl enjoyed meeting people and making friends wherever his travels might have taken him.
Carl is survived by his wife, Kelly; stepchildren, Matthew Stovall and Rachel Stovall, both of Iowa City; a son, Dane Thorson of Milwaukee, Wis.; a daughter, Jessica Macal of Cedar Rapids; granddaughters, Mickala Thorson, Sydney Thorson and Madison Thorson; an aunt; an uncle; and many, many cousins.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Darryl Andrews.
