Carey, Justin Lewis
Justin Lewis Carey, 32, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, June 6, 2013, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. Funeral Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at New Covenant Bible Church, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Tye Male. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church and also one hour before the service Saturday. Arrangements are by Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his parents, Jeff and Lori Carey of Swisher; fiancee, Christine Fasano; daughter, Marley (age 4); sister, Lindsay Carey of Marion; brothers, Nate (Julie) Carey of Highlands Ranch, Colo. and Matt Carey of Swisher; grandparents, Ted and Carol Carey of Oglesby, Ill.; and nieces and nephews, Max Sauerbrei, Sophie Rahe and Will Rahe.
Also surviving are aunts and uncles, Kevin (Tammy) Carey of Oglesby, Ill., Dave (Margaret) Carey of LaSalle, Ill., Chris (Lenora) Carey of Oglesby, Ill., Nancy (John) Piccatto of Spring Valley, Ill., Sue Meyers of Granville, Ill., Nance (Mike) Ptak of Olgesby, Ill. and Paul (Julie) Schlingman of Tucson, Ariz.
Justin was born June 23, 1980, in Peru, Ill., the son of Jeff and Lori (Schlingman) Carey. He graduated from Kennedy High School in 1998 and Mount Mercy University in 2011 with a double major in finance and accounting. Justin was a financial adviser for Securian Advisors in Hiawatha.
He enjoyed playing softball and basketball. He also coached basketball at the YMCA and was a loyal fan of the Cardinals, Packers and the Hawkeyes. Justin had a special place in his heart for pets, especially Meadow, Digger, Lambo and Jessie.
On Easter Sunday 2009, he became engaged to Christine. Their daughter, Marley was the love of his life. He will always be remembered for the joy and happiness he brought to his family and friends. Justin will be greatly missed. There was never a dull moment when he was around. Justin was a special person with a unique gift for making others laugh.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Joan Hamlin; grandfather, Paul Schlingman; and uncle, Bill Meyers.
A memorial fund has been established.
