Campbell, Arthur L. 'Art'
Arthur L. “Art” Campbell, 85, of rural Iowa City, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, at Iowa City Rehabilitation & Health Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside. The Rev. Martin Goetz will officiate. The family will greet friends Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City, where a parish vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.
Art was born Sept. 26, 1926, in Biwabik, Minn., the son of George and Louise (Forte) Campbell. Growing up in Eveleth, Minn., Art married Joyce Ahern on May 24, 1952, in Clarinda, Iowa. He served in the Army Air Force from 1943-1946 during World War II.
He received his bachelor's degree from St. Cloud Teachers College; a master's degree from Colorado State College and continued graduate studies at Northwestern University and The University of Iowa.
Art was a science teacher for 36 years, teaching at schools in Downers Grove, Ill., Worthington, Minn., Iowa City High School and the last 20 years at English Valleys High School, retiring in 1991.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside and the Iowa City American Legion. He served a term on the Iowa City Board of Education from 1967-1969. During this time he was a research associate in toxicology at the University of Iowa. From 1969-1971, he was vice president of Red Ball Engineering.
Art loved music and played piano in many bands during high school, college and while in the service.
He derived great pleasure in the achievements of his students - regardless of what path in life they chose.
Art is survived by his wife, Joyce; his children, Coreen Brown (Steve) of Ash Grove, Mo., Carey Campbell (Richard Jaskiel) of Milwaukie, Ore., Sean Campbell (Pamela) of Fort Worth, Texas, Brian Campbell of Winter Park, Fla., and Todd Campbell (Linda Madigan) of Stanwood, Wash.; two sisters-in-law, Sylvia Campbell of South St. Paul, Minn., and Dorothy Sims of Sunnyvale, Calif.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, George; and a son, Kevin.
