Cam Kolkmeier
Cedar Rapids
On Thursday, September 4th, 2025, at 12:03 pm, Cam Kolkmeier took his final breath and our lives were forever changed. His spirit was finally freed from the addiction he had battled most of his life and the pain of metastatic cancer. He is at peace.
Cam was born on May 25th, 1965, to E.G (Charlie) and Bette Kolkmeier in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was the youngest of four siblings - Kelle, Torre, and Kip. Cam often spoke of his traveling and loved sharing stories of the places he visited with his family throughout his childhood. He graduated from Washington Senior High School in 1983.
Cam loved tennis, skiing in Colorado, a good round of golf with friends, and lively games of Clue, Uno, and Kings in the Corner with his family in the evenings. In 2014, Cam made the courageous decision to live a life of sobriety so he could continue being a meaningful part of his granddaughters’ lives.
The true light and brightness in Cam’s life was his daughter Suzanne and his granddaughters Ashlynn and Ilyzza. Together, they planned, planted, and picked gardens; built snow forts and waged snowball wars; and took vacations to Chicago, Dubuque, and nearby places in Cedar Rapids. They visited observatories to explore moon phases, constellations, and comets. Cam even mastered the art of “girl hair” - ponytails, pigtails, buns, and braids - for his granddaughters. He never missed a first day of school, orientation, conference, sock hop, carnival, book fair, or even a Thursday mass at All Saints.
Cam had a deep kindness and gentle heart, he would give everything he had to those he loved. He cared for his father, stepmother, and “second mom” in their final days and he wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Those left to carry Cam’s story forward include his daughters Suzanne (Santiago) and Jennifer, his son Drew, and his beloved granddaughters Ashlynn and Ilyzza. He is also survived by his longtime friend Angie; sisters Kelle (Dan) and Torre; his brother Kip (Barb); and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family. There was never a doubt that Cam cherished every moment spent making memories with his family and friends, he will be deeply missed, and there is a hole in our hearts.
We hope that everyone who shared in Cam’s life holds onto a funny memory, a joyful visit, or a meaningful conversation with him. Until we meet again, may you always find Rock Star parking, live a copacetic life, and just relax.
Please join us for a small celebration of life on Sunday, September 28th from 3-6 pm at Tommy’s Restaurant, 393 Edgewood Rd NW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52405. We would love to see you and share some stories about your favorite moments with Cam.
