CALVIN "CAL" PALMER MOORE

Calvin "Cal" Palmer Moore, 85, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, from postherpatic neuralgia, a complication of shingles onset in 2003 and prostate cancer from 2016. Visitation from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2018, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Funeral Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018, at the funeral home. Burial: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018, at Lafayette Cemetery, rural Alburnett.
Cal was born on Jan. 19, 1933, on a farm northwest of Alburnett, the son of Elmer and Orlou (Stick) Moore. He graduated from Alburnett High School in 1950. Cal graduated from Iowa State University in 1954, with a degree in agronomy. He married Christina Rawson in 1952 in Cedar Rapids. Cal was an ROTC student at Iowa State. He served in the U.S. Air Force and Reserve for over 20 years, retiring as Major. Cal was a strong advocate for veteran organizations, serving as adjutant and commander for Post 98 in Cumberland, Wis. He was employed with Soil Conservation Service for 10 years, followed by Prudential Insurance for over 20 years, working in the Real Estate Investment department. His employment required many moves, including to Tipton, Eldora and Audubon, Iowa; Madison, Wis.; Minneapolis; Detroit; Chicago; and retiring in northern Wisconsin. Cal and Chris returned to Cedar Rapids in 2000. They volunteered at Brucemore for over 10 years, as well as the Alburnett Historical Society, holding board and officer positions. They both received the Governor of Iowa Volunteer Award in 2010. They enjoyed traveling and took many trips abroad as well as within the United States.
Cal is survived by his wife, Christina; daughter, Susan (Don) Loscheider; three grandchildren, Nolan, Colin and Courtney; sister-in-laws, Ardis Kirkpatrick Moore, Ada Rawson Olmsted and Dolores Rawson; and brother-in-law, Weir Nelson; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Alan and Jeffrey; brother, Wendell Moore; sister Vera Marie Moore; many sister and brother-in-laws; and nephew, Richard Moore.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Marion Christian Church or Alburnett Historical Society.
