Caldwell, Robert L.
Robert L. Caldwell, 96, of Hiawatha, completed his life's journey on Feb. 15, 2012, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on April 25, 1915, he was the eldest child of Paul L. and Myrtle (Thomas) Caldwell.
Robert was ordained a minister in the United Presbyterian Church. He served churches in Roney's Point, W.Va., Whittier, Calif., and Des Moines, Iowa. He also served five churches in California as interim minister and two churches in New Zealand. He was pastor emeritus of Shadow Hills Presbyterian Church, Sunland, Calif.
Robert graduated in 1940 from Monmouth College, Monmouth, Ill., with majors in English and Greek. He received a Master of Theology degree in 1944 from Pittsburgh-Xenia Theological Seminary. An honorary Doctor of Divinity degree was conferred by Monmouth College in 1957. Postgraduate study was done at St. Andrews University in Scotland and Christ Church College in Canterbury, England.
Robert married Anna Marie Young, of Sterling, Ill., on June 10, 1942. For 69 years they shared life's wonderful experiences together. They were world travelers, with Robert leading many tours to the British Isles, Europe, the Holy Land, New Zealand, and Australia.
Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Anna; his four children, Barbara Caldwell, Judie Madden, Susan (Larry) Reeve, all of Cedar Rapids, and Robert (Helen) of West Branch; grandchildren, Kevin and Eric (Julie) Madden, Iris and Joseph Caldwell; great-grandchildren, Tara, Jessica and Julielynn; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jack and Paul Caldwell; and sister, Betty Raines.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. William Jamison at 1 p.m. Feb. 25 at Calvin-Sinclair Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, 315 18th Ave., Hiawatha, IA 52233.
The family thanks the staff at Hiawatha Care Center and the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy for their loving care of Robert. We also thank Fadi Y. Yacoub, M.D. and Joyce M. Vavra, ARNP, BC, for their attentive and compassionate care of Robert.
Robert was a gifted speaker and a man of great intellect and wit.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed.
