Caldwell, Lillian I. Herman
Lillian I. Herman Caldwell, 86, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at Grace Community Church of God with Pastor Ed Kraft officiating. Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery, Shellsburg. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton, from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
A memorial fund has been established.
Lillian was born Jan. 27, 1924, near Amana, to Anton and Mary (Svoboda) Herman. On Oct. 27, 1956, she was united in marriage to Lyle Caldwell at Dubuque. He preceded her in death on Feb. 27, 2006.
Lillian was employed at Hawkeye Rubber Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids for almost 40 years. Following her retirement, she worked in the lunch room at Shellsburg Elementary School. She was a member of the former Grace Trinity Church in Shellsburg, Rebekah Lodge and the Eagle's Club in Cedar Rapids. She loved flowers, gardening, birds, fishing, camping and caring for the “old” people in her neighborhood. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children, Ben (Rosie) Caldwell of Newton, Karen Robbins of Shellsburg, Naomi (Don) Zeller of Hiawatha, Sandra (Doc) Booth of Palo, and Lylelene (Greg) Svoboda of Shellsburg; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren and another expected in March.
Preceded in death by her parents and husband, Lillian was the last of 11 children born to Anton and Mary Herman.
