C.M. "JACK" WAYSON

C.M. "Jack" Wayson, 87, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018, at the Vinton Lutheran Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at Vinton Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jessica Crane-Munoz officiating. Military rites will be performed at the church by George G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 of Vinton and Iowa Military Funeral Honors. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton and one hour before services Wednesday at the church. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton.
Jack was born Dec. 27, 1930, in Polk Township, Urbana, Iowa, the son of C. Mearl and A. Fern Rouse Wayson. His family moved to Vinton in 1934. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1949.
On Nov. 6, 1951, Jack was united in marriage to Dixie Lou Stickels at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The following March, Jack left to serve his country in the Korean War in the U.S. Army. He returned to Benton County following his service and worked for the county for 43 years as an assistant engineer, retiring on his 62nd birthday in 1992.
Jack was an active member, usher and elder at Vinton Presbyterian Church, and he loved to work in the kitchen. He was a member of George G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 in Vinton. He also was a member of the morning Kiwanis Club in Vinton and Brooklyn, participating on the scholarship fund committee in Brooklyn.
Jack is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dixie of Vinton; his children, Sonja Bridge and husband Joseph of Cedar Rapids, B.J. Wayson and wife Michelle of Vinton, and Melissa Chapman and husband Mark of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Stephanie Bridge and husband James Heistand of Cedar Rapids, Dr. Blake Wayson and wife Jennifer of Waterloo, Elissa Maxwell and husband Brock of Altoona, Michael Wayson and wife Rachel of Mount Auburn and Cole Laughridge of Des Moines; and eight great-grandchildren, Angel, Caitlin, Brady, Bo, Emma, Jack, Kyleigh and Sara.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Georgia Nash and Norma Musker; two stillborn brothers; and one stillborn sister.
A memorial fund has been established.
