Dr. Byron C. Kluss, Ph.D., 88, died July 8, 2016, in Cedar Falls, where he recently moved from Irvine, Calif., to enjoy retirement closer to family.
Survivors include two sons, Robert and William Kluss, and five grandchildren, all from Orange County, Calif. Other survivors include Sue, Mike and John Willett of Cedar Falls, Janae, Nick, Naiya and Malachi Nuss of Waverly, Jacob Willett of Champaign, Ill., Bob and Judi Storm, Robby Storm, Nick, Vanessa, Avery and Vince Palmer, all of Belle Plaine, Brad and Judy Storm of Elberon, Joel, Hillary and Liam Storm of Pella and Sarah and Jordan Gross of Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Kluss; and his parents, August and Florence Kluss, and his sister, Arleen Kluss Storm, all of Belle Plaine.
Dr. Kluss was born on a farm near Luzerne and attended Belle Plaine High School, graduating in 1945. He graduated in 1949 from the University of Iowa with a degree in zoology.
He was a member of ROTC and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Reserve upon graduation. He served in the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor and a Purple Heart medal. He was honorably discharged in 1952 and returned to college, earning an M.S. degree and Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Iowa.
He was professor of biology at California State University, Long Beach, from 1959 until retirement in 1992.
Dr. Kluss enjoyed traveling, gourmet cooking, reading, music, singing in church choir, and spending time with family and friends.
Memorial services will be July 18 in California.
