Byron C. Sweeting, 88, of Riverside, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Monday, April 23, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Following the committal services, a time of food and fellowship will be held at St. Mary's Church. Visitation will be held Monday, April 30, 2018, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established at the funeral home in Byron's name.

Byron Chauncey Sweeting was born on Oct. 17, 1929, in Riverside, Iowa, the son of Arthur P. and Anna K. (Stebral) Sweeting. He graduated from Riverside Public High School. On Nov. 20, 1948, Byron was united in marriage to Dorothy Maxine Stransky at St. Mary's Church in Riverside. He was a farmer and carpenter. Byron was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Iowa City Moose, Iowa City Eagles and a social member of the Riverside V.F.W. Post 6414. Byron enjoyed cutting and clearing timber, working livestock, butchering and smoking his own meats, mushroom hunting, tinkering in his shop, playing cards, socializing with friends as often as possible, gardening, canning, dancing, traveling, going to the casinos and attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting events at school with his wife, Dorothy, but most of all, he dearly loved to spend time with family.
Byron is the husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather of 108 family members, which he will be deeply missed by, including his children, Jerry (Marge) Sweeting of Riverside, Ron Sweeting and special friend, Kathleen Sadler of Iowa City, Keith (Penelope) Sweeting of Riverside, Carol (Kevin) Kidwell of Solon, Connie (Doug) Shalla of Kalona, Judy (Rick) Gerot of Ainsworth and Arthur (Shari) Sweeting of Riverside; 25 grandchildren, Jeremy (Lora) Sweeting, Dan Sweeting and special friend, Ashley Keasling, Brent Sweeting, Betsy Sweeting, Brook Sweeting, Amanda (Scott) Yeggy, Benjamin (Shelly) Sweeting, Anthony (Angie) Sweeting, Jennifer (Jason) Schlabaugh, Heather (Gregory) Koch, Matthew (Courtney) Kidwell, Lindsey (Travis) Meade, Kelsey (Patrick) Swancutt, Heidi (Luke) Miller, Nicholas (Jayna) Shalla, Jason Shalla and special friend, Beth Morris, Stefaney (Justin) Lawrence, Courtney Shalla, Ryan Gerot, Tyler (Nikki) Gerot, Brittany (Rob) Redlinger, Amy (Henry) Vazquez, Tina Milder, Anna (Brent) Schneider and Haley Sweeting; and 51 great- grandchildren.
Byron was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy, of 69 years on Feb. 25, 2018; great-grandson, Augustine Wyatt Koch; and sister, Inez (Burley) Franck.
