Butters, Carol
Carol Butters, 67, of Iowa City, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Mass of Christian Burial will begin Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City. The Rev. Michael Phillips and Pastor Chris Arch will officiate. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City, where a vigil service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty.
Carol was born Aug. 28, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of Nicholas and Bernadette (Emond) Kersbergen. With her family moving to Cedar Rapids in 1956, Carol graduated from Jefferson High School. She then received a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's degree in vocational rehabilitation, both from the University of Iowa.
She married Thomas Boyd Butters on March 12, 1966, in Iowa City. The couple later divorced yet remained friends.
Carol believed in giving back to her community as she volunteered at the Mercy Hospital Gift Shop, the Iowa City Public Library and was active in supporting the Republican Party.
She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, where she was a Eucharistic minister. She was also a member of St. Wenceslaus Altar & Rosary and University I Club. Carol would cook for the construction staff of the Habitat for Humanity projects.
Survivors include her daughters, Beth (Scott) Geguzis of Williamsburg, Nichole (Jake) Carroll of Iowa City and Becky Ives of Fairfield; sister, Karen (Roger) Souter of Tiffin; nephew, Nick Souter; grandchildren, Alyssa Bedford, Blake and Charley Geguzis, Patrick, Kaley and Jacob Ives, and Grace and Gabrielle Bedford and one great-granddaughter, Ashley Bedford.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents; a son-in-law, Nathan Bedford; and her former husband.
If a woman is measured by the company she keeps, Carol's life ended with a positive net worth. She was considered a treasured family member and friend by many, and valued the times she spent with them. Carol will be remembered for her mischievous wit, generous spirit and a loving heart.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Carol A. Butters Memorial Fund.
